Frequently Asked Questions

A Business Activity Statement, or BAS, is a form submitted to the Australian Taxation Office reporting your Goods and Services Tax (GST), PAYG withholding tax and instalments, as well as any other tax obligations of your business.

Not everyone needs to complete a BAS.

You only need to lodge a BAS if you are currently registered for GST. Businesses are legally required to register for GST once their gross income exceeds $75,000. If you are starting a new business, make sure that as soon as you begin to earn over this amount, you register for GST as to avoid a bill from the ATO.

The ATO will send you a BAS when it is time to lodge one.

If your business is registered for GST and you are required to lodge a BAS, you will be required to enter the correct figures for your business regarding:

  • Goods and services tax (GST)
  • Pay as you go (PAYG) instalments
  • PAYG withholding tax
  • Any other taxes

Mornington Peninsula Bookkeeping can assist you in reaching the correct figures and completing the BAS when required.

Your business’ GST turnover determines how often you will be required to lodge a BAS. Generally it is quarterly if your GST turnover is below $20 million, and monthly if it is above $20 million, but may be different depending on a number of different factors.

Make sure you are aware of the obligations for your type of business. The BAS requirements differ for sole traders and other business categories, so make sure you know your obligations.

A BAS agent service is a tax agent who can lodge your BAS on behalf of your business. BAS agents advise their clients on their tax obligations and their legal requirements for reporting. Registered BAS agents lodging Business Activity Statements electronically on behalf of their clients are granted an extended deadline.
